After their recent win against Dulce, the Tucumcari Rattlers are preparing to meet Capitan on Friday in quarterfinals of the 2A state playoffs.
“The people that come and watch are going to be in for one exciting match up,” Rattlers coach Dub Smith said. “We feel this game is more important than when we played Santa Rosa. The loser of this game will hang up their pads for the season.
“They have a great quarterback with three good receivers. We will have to play great defense in order to contain their passing game and eliminate or limit the mistake we make in the game.”
Capitan head coach Jodie Scott said, “Tucumcari scares us to death. They are a very physical team with tremendous size. We know that they are a lot better football team then their record shows. Brian Lopez is a huge fullback and we will be working on finding a way to tackle and stop him.
The Rattlers advance after a 49-0 victory over the Dulce Hawks Friday night at Tucumcari. Senior Brian Lopez had two rushing touchdowns and juniors D.J. Martinez and Ryan Fought each had two rushing touchdowns during Friday night’s game against the Hawks.
The winner will play either No. 2 seed Lordsburg or No. 7 seed Dexter. Smith said the Rattlers aren’t concerned about that right now.
“We are playing one game at a time,” Smith said. “We need to take care of the game this week and can not think about playing next week until we do.”
Tucumcari will play at 7 p.m. Friday against the Capitan Tigers at Capitan. The winner will advance to meet the winner of Lordsburg and Dexter.
