The Tucumcari Rattlers moved to 0-2 after a 58-76 loss to the Estancia Bears Thursday night at Tucumcari.
The Rattlers trailed the Tigers early in the first period 12-20. Rattlers center Drew White scored all 12 of the first period points for the Rattlers. In the second period the Rattlers were unable to match the Tigers momentum and the Tigers’ Chris Otero remained an outside threat hitting four 3-pointers in the first half. The first half ended with the Rattlers trailing 29-44.
“We could not keep up with them in the first half. They played with a lot of intensity and we simply didn’t match it in the first half,” said Coach John Span. “I’m proud of the guys because they didn’t quit tonight. We always feel that you play to play and our motto is all or nothing.”
In the second half the Rattlers matched the Tigers intensity and worked on keeping the ball away from the outside and slowly worked to lessen the Tigers lead. Yet, they missed free throws and missed open men down court for scoring opportunities. Although the Rattlers battled hard; they fell to the Tigers 58-76.
“We need to dribble with our heads up. We missed a lot of scoring opportunities because people were not looking down court. Drew and I always hustle down court and we need to recognize and take advantage of all chances to score,” said Rattler center Josh Villegas.
