Rattlers pull split at home

The Tucumcari Rattlers improved to 1-2 after a 75-63 win over the Fort Sumner Foxes Tuesday night.

“We did very well tonight. We worked on keeping scoring opportunities down and making sure we picked up every one through their transition,” said Coach John Span. “We play two games this weekend one in Portales then one in Logan. I’d rather play then practice. When we play we get to adjust and learn new things and the tempo of the play is a bit faster than it is when we practice.”

Drew White had a double-double to lead Tucumcari with 29 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rattlers trailed in the Foxes for most of the first period. With little more then a minute left in the first period Rattlers A.J. Trujillo stole the ball at half court and went in for a easy lay-up making it 14 all and tying the game for the Rattlers.

In the second period the Rattlers took an early 20-18 lead after a fast break lay-up from Andrez Apodaca. The Rattlers maintained the lead for the rest of the period going into the half 29-28.

In the opening minutes of the third period Rattlers forward Curtis Simpson hit a three pointer and then Rattlers guard Andrez Apodaca stole the unbounded ball for a quick lay-up giving the Rattlers a 34-28 lead. The Rattlers held a strong lead for half of the third period but with missed rebounds and turnovers the Foxes fought back shorting the Rattlers lead 43-41. But the Rattlers would pull away in the closing minutes of the third and go into the fourth period with an eight point lead.

Both teams were in foul trouble early in the fourth period with the fouled bonus being awarded to both teams. The Rattlers began to pick up the lose balls with rebounds and went in strong on lay-ups drawing the foul from the Foxes turning many 2 point plays into 3 point plays. Taking advantage of the fouls bonuses and strong scoring threat of centers Drew White and Josh Villegas under the goal along with good clock management the Rattlers quickly pulled away from the Foxes and came away with their first win 75-63.

Villegas added 14 points and Simpson 12 for Tucumcari, while Rawley Stallard had 20 for the Foxes.

Girls fall to Vixens
The Lady Rattlers drop to 1-3 after a 26-39 loss to the Fort Sumner Lady Vixens.
“We did well in the first half. But the girls came out in the second half and began to hurry and a lot of their shots would not fall,” said Coach Wayne Ferguson.

The Lady Rattlers kept the score close throughout the entire first half. Rattlers guard Samantha Montano and forward Kadi Powers accounted for most of the Rattlers first half points and trailed by two going into the half 18-19.

The Lady Rattlers had trouble with missed field goals and broken plays throughout the second half and only put eight points on the board in the last two periods. Despite the low scoring the Lady Rattlers intensity did not fade and they continued to match the Lady Vixens pace throughout the game but fell short 26-39.

“We have improved a lot last year we didn’t play them as close. We just couldn’t get anything to go in for us during the second half and that really hurt us,” said Powers. “ We will focus on completing and not rushing the play and work on recognizing scoring opportunities during our practice.”

Bree’Anna Lucero scored 14 points to lead the Vixens. Kadi Powers scored nine to lead Tucumcari, while Samantha Montano added six.

The Rattlers next game is 5:30 p.m. Friday at Portales. The Lady Rattlers play Saturday at Logan in a 4 p.m. tilt.
