Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Hargis

Services: 2 p.m., Friday at Center Street United Methodist Church in Tucumcari.

Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Hargis, 95, of Alamogordo, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at her home, surrounded by her family and caretakers.

Mrs. Hargis was born in Woodbine, Texas, on Aug. 23, 1911 to Barton and Mellie (Mitchell) Martin. She married Joseph Keith “Hap” Hargis on Oct. 4, 1932, in Roy, N.M. From 1944 until 1969 they resided in Las Vegas, where they were in the dairy business. Beth was president of the Home Extension Club in the 1950s where she distributed library books to farmers’ wives. They retired to Tucumcari in 1969, living on a small farm until the death of Hap in 1975. At that time, Beth moved into town where she spent over a thousand hours volunteering at the Trigg Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hargis was also a very active member of the Center Street United Methodist Church as well as giving many of her hours to the Womens’ Association. In 1995 she moved to Alamogordo to be closer to her family. She joined the Grace United Methodist Church but for health reasons could not dedicate as much time to the church as she had in Tucumcari.

Survivors include her three daughters, Lahoma (Oscar) White of Alamogordo, Jean (Otis) Ashorn of The Woodlands, Texas, and Deanna (Chuck) Stanford and of Lincoln City, Ore.; seven grandchildren, Kay (Bob) Sanders of Edgewood, Diana (William) Bridgman of Austin, Texas, Tom (Tracy) Strickland of Spring, Texas, Deborah(Russ) Manies of Portland, Ore., Darrell Hovland of Clarksville, Tenn., Leeann (Mark) Griffin of Amarillo and Billy(Celesta) White of Rio Rancho; 15 great grandchildren, Michael Terry Sanders of Las Cruces, Matthew Tracy Sanders and his wife Melissa of West Jordan, Utah, Nathan Bridgman of Austin, Tori, Cody and Josh Strickland of Spring, Ryan and Stephanie Manies of Wilsonville, Oregon, Gavin Hovland of Clarksville, Kyle and Jeffery Griffin of Amarillo, Shaye and Amanda White of Albuquerque, and Jessi and Amy White of Rio Rancho; and her sister Medie Colwell of Springville, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hap, a grandson Bobby White, three brothers, Henry, Fred and Raines Martin, and two sisters, Tinnie Mae Dale and Blanche Raper.

Thomas C. Broom of Center Street United Methodist Church will officate at the services, followed by burial at the Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bob Sanders, Billy White, Tom Strickland, Mark Griffin, Michael Sanders and Mathew Sanders. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren and her three sons-in law.

Arrangements are by Hamilton-O’Dell Funeral Home in Alamogordo.
