The Logan Longhorns came from behind to beat the San Jon Coyotes Thursday night at Logan.
“San Jon is a great team,” said Logan coach Billy Burns.
“We know if we play them again, it’s going to be another close game. They have a lot of great players like Richard (Vasquez) and Danny (Shetter) that will make our next game exciting,” said Burns.
It was non-stop action in the 1A district match-up.
Midway through the final period, the Coyotes lost the lead which they had held since half-time. The Longhorns took advantage of free throw shots.
The Coyotes had managed to stave off the Longhorns for most of the third period but well shot field goals and free throws from Logan’s Steven Carter kept the Longhorns hot on the Coyotes heels.
Logan played with zeal trying to keep their hard fought for lead but the Coyotes were not going quietly. With less then a minute on the clock, Coyotes’ senior Richard Vasquez hit a 3-pointer bringing the Coyotes within three.
Vasquez had three 3-pointers in the game.
With 23 seconds on the clock the Coyotes had the ball in at their goal and a missed 3-pointer from Vasquez.
The resulting tie sent the Longhorns fans into a frenzy which was quieted by the roar of the Coyotes fans when a loose ball went in their favor.
With just 4 seconds left on the clock, Coyotes senior Danny Shetter got the ball on the outside arch and put up the 3-pointer which did not fall and Logan’s Taylor Smith came down with the rebound that ended the game at 65-62.

Logan’s Lady Longhorns controlled most of the game, except for the third period.
In the third, the Lady Coyotes controlled not only the tempo but seemed to have turned the tide on the Lady Longhorns. They kept Logan from scoring most of the third and scored 11 points trying to chip away at the 14 point lead from the half.
But the Lady Horns rallied back scoring 9 points in the final two minutes of the period and regained a 12 point lead.
The momentum shifted to the Longhorns in the fourth. The Coyotes only scored five points to the Lady Longhorns 14 and Logan got the 65-42 win.
“We had the third period,” Said Coach Lacy Bidegain. “We can play with any team in our district we just need to focus during the game and play with intensity.”
