Rattlers fall short in district squeaker

The Rattlers are 0-2 after another district game that was a squeaker on Friday night.

The Tucumcari Rattlers fell short of the Texico Wolverines 50-47 and the Lady Wolverines overtook the Tucumcari Rattlers 59-18.

In the boys game, it was a exciting final period as both teams were unwilling to settle for anything less than a victory. The game seemed out of reach as the Wolverines held a 6 point lead with a minute left to play but a quick jumper and steal with a lay-up for 4 points from Rattlers senior Josh Villegas brought them within two.

With less then a minute on the board, Rattlers coach John Span had to put players in to foul to force Texico to shoot free throws and keep time on the clock.

Span sent in his junior varsity unit to execute this plan and once the foul was committed the starters were subbed back in. The Wolverines made 4-of-5 free throws in the final seconds of the game giving them a 3-point lead and the win.

“We played hard tonight and didn’t give up during the game,” said Span. “We need to work on boxing out and not give up big baskets. They got two big baskets at the end of the half and in the third, and those four points made a huge difference. We need to work on the flow of the transition from offense to defense to keep the other team from exploiting that slack for points.”

Girls
There was a lot of defensive pressure from the Lady Wolverines Friday night during their 59-18 win over The Lady Rattlers.

“We needed to match their intensity and confidence during the first half,” said coach Wayne Ferguson. “I’m not making any excuses but some of the girls are battling the flu. And they still played all the way through. When we were playing zone, we had players hitting from the 3-point line so we went to a man-to-man defense to cover their outside shooters.”

The Lady Rattlers continued to hustle down the court in the final period despite their fatigue and managed to limit the Lady Wolverines to only 8 points – their lowest scored period of the game.

With only a total of 9 points in the first half, the Lady Rattlers could not seem to find their rhythm on the court. Their shots and passes were often hurried and off the mark resulting in turnovers and, sometimes, points.

The Lady Wolverines were not making it any easier for the Lady Rattlers on the defensive side of the ball as they scored 24 points in the first and 15 in the second leading 39-9 at half-time.

During the second half, the Lady Rattlers again only scored 9 points but they trimmed the Lady Wolverines scoring to 12 in the third and 8 in the fourth. Nevertheless, the damage was done and the Lady Wolverines won 59-18.

“We need to take our practices a little more seriously,” said Rattlers T’Shawna Span. “We need to focus more during the game and work on our shots.”

“I can’t wait to play against Texico again,” said Rattlers Cydnie Rich. “We’ll be at full strength then and have our man-to-man defense down better.”
