Martha Chavez Shoemaker

Services: 10 a.m., Wednesday visitation at Tarpening & Son Chapel, 1 West Grand, Artesia, N.M. At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, a rosary will be recited at the Terpening & Son Chapel. 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church of Artesia, N.M..
Mrs. Shoemaker, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at her home in Artesia.
Mrs. Shoemaker was born March 13, 1926 in Alamogordo, N.M.; the daughter of Gregorio Chavez and Felicitas (Sanchez) Chavez.
On Jan. 15, 1951 she was married to David Troy Shoemaker in Clovis, N.M. She came to Artesia in 1956 from Fort Sumner, Texas.
Mrs. Shoemaker was a clerk at McClintock Drugstore and retired in the late 1960s. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, where she served as a catechist and CCD coordinator for 25 years. She was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, San Jose, and Cursillistas. She also received the Instrumento De Paz award. She was a longtime participant in the Eddy County Fair.
Survivors include her sons James Shoemaker of Artesia, Roy (Sue) Shoemaker of Artesia; daughter, Frances Scholl of Morganton, N.C.; brothers, Fidel Chavez and Raymond Chavez, both of Tucumcari; sister Ruth Martinez of Chino, of Claremont , Davonna (Mark) Ledet of Hernando, Miss., Jamie (Ricky) Good of Anahuac, Texas, Troy (Synetta) Shoemaker Denver City, Texas, Roy David Shoemaker of Roswell, N.M., Ralph (Laurie) Shoemaker Sudan, Texas, Martha (Cory) McCarrell of Hobbs, N.M., Molly (Danny) Juarez of Artesia. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shoemaker was preceded in death by her husband, David Troy Shoemaker on July 11, 1975, her parents, a brother Manuel Chavez and sisters, Guadalupe Salazar, Margaret Gonzales and Lupe Rico.

Paul Murtagh will officiate at the services. Burial will be at the Twin Oaks Memorial Park in Artesia. Pallbearers will be Cory McCarrell, Johnny Chavez, Norman Chavez, Tony Chavez, Ernie Chavez and Ted Lovato.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent’s De Paul Society.
