San Jon Middle School took second place in its division at the annual New Mexico Science Olympiad held late last month at New Mexico Tech, Socorro. With 324 points, they had a solid lead over third place Albuquerque Academy with 304 points. First place went to Albuquerque Area Home School with 418 points.
In all, there were more than 800 student “intelletes” – representing 25 middle schools and 25 high schools from throughout New Mexico – who competed in 45 spirited mental workouts.
During the daylong event on Feb. 24, teams of Science Olympians propelled mouse-trap-powered vehicles, built Rube Goldberg contraptions, and constructed efficient boomilevers, bridges, and robots in a quest for Olympic-style medals and the chance to represent New Mexico at the national competition.
