The Rattlers took second place on Monday at its Tucumcari Invitational Golf Tournament that drew competition from three other New Mexico high school varsity teams.
The Tucumcari High School golf team lost first place by four strokes to Bernalillo.
In individual scoring, Rattlers Stephen Smith tied for third, 85, and Qasim Badshah took fifth, 89.
“(I’m) Just a little disappointed that we did not win at home,” said Howie Tucker Tucumcari golf coach. “They need to work on staying close to par and staying away from the big numbers on the score card like 7, 8, and 10. We work on keeping tempo and rhythm and sometimes the players just over-swing the club trying to make the ball go further and it throws their game off. We will use this as a learning experience for our next tournament in Santa Fe.”
Tucumcari hosted Robertson, Bernalillo and West Las Vegas for 18 holes. Other than a little wind at noon, the day was good for golf. The teams split up and went through two rounds at the nine-hole Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course.
“I had some of my shots affected by the wind but nothing too serious,” said Rattlers junior Johnny Barreras.
“The tournament was great,” said Travis Pecos of Bernalillo. “The course is in good shape and it was a good day to golf.”
The Rattlers will play 9 a.m. in the Capital City Invitational on April 2 in Santa Fe.
