The Internal Revenue Service is giving a grace period to tornado victims in Quay and Curry counties.

It’s pushing back its April 17 deadline for taxpayers struck by tornadoes on March 23-24 in in New Mexico, where a disasters were declared, according to an IRS press release.

“I’m sure it would be relief to them. They have other worries – meeting with FEMA, with their insurance companies and organizing their lives. I’m sure it will help them,” said Debra Sloan, CPA, at the McFarland CPA office in Tucumcari.

Deadlines for affected taxpayers to file returns, pay taxes and perform other time-sensitive acts falling on or after March 23, 2007 and on or before June 1, 2007 have been postponed to June 1, 2007, the release stated.

Certain conditions do apply and taxpayers should contact their tax preparer or the IRS for more information, regarding the grace period.
