The Tucumcari Rattlers started their district run, 1-1, with a tie for first after a double header with the Texico Wolverines.
At Wednesday night’s game, the Wolverines hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth which gave them the lead after the Rattlers tied it in the fifth. Despite several charges at a comeback, the Rattlers lost, 8-10, in the seventh inning.
The game was a continuation of Monday’s double-header in which the Rattlers won the first game 10-5, but the second game was called during the second inning because of lightning.
“Our guys played well against a good district team,” said Rattlers coach Tony Alarcon. “All of the players contributed in their own way, offensively and defensively. I’m very proud of how they bounced back and didn’t lose their motivation despite being behind.”
During Wednesday’s game there were two rundowns between third base and home. In the first inning, Rattlers catcher Matt Garcia and third baseman Andre Debord ran down a Wolverine for the out.
In the fifth, Rattlers Jarod Rael took a lead off third base when the Wolverines third baseman Matt Mares and catcher Seth Bailey tried to tag him out in a rundown. But Rael managed to scramble back to base and was safe as Mares dropped the ball during the tag.
“All I was thinking was how to get back to base without getting tagged,” said Rael. “I was trying to draw them away from the easy out at second and it worked a little too well.”
