Tucumcari School Board members reviewed an $8.685 million draft budget for the 2007-2008 school year on Monday night.

The budget is $133,711 more than the previous school year’s budget.

The board does not take any action on the proposed budget which is approved by the state’s Public Education Department. The budget is to be sent to the state later this week, school officials said.

Areas of increased costs included salaries and benefits such as health insurance.
In other business before the board:
• The principal of Tucumcari High School, Susan Montoya, and assistant to the principal, J. Michael Patton, turned in their resignations.

• There was a discussion of the review process to update the school policies. While the policies provide broad guidelines, it does not spell out, for example, what student infractions would result in a particular disciplinary action. The board said it would separate out the broad policy items and then work on more specific guidelines and regulations section by section.

• The board also discussed a proposed budget for girls fast pitch softball. Rough cost estimates for the start up of such a team are about $16,700, said athletic director Wayne Ferguson. Some of the equipment costs are one-time expenses and a regulation field could be adapted from an existing baseball field, Ferguson said. Students have expressed interest in such a team in the past, Ferguson said.

However, the introduction of a fast pitch program could draw students away from the Rattlers track and field and golf teams, he said. Board members suggested that Ferguson conduct another more current interest survey among students.

If such a team were established, it could not play competitively for two years, according to high school game regulations, Ferguson said.

l Highlights from Tucumcari High School student council representative, Desiree Martinez, were: a blood drive scheduled for May, a “Name that Rattler” contest and presentation of the Rattler mascot yesterday, and upcoming election of council officers for the 2007-2008 school year.
