The Rattlers advanced to the regionals after sweeping the Clayton Yellowjackets in doubleheader action Tuesday afternoon at Clayton.
“We needed to win the first game of the doubleheader,” said Rattlers Coach Tony Alarcon. “We used up our good pitchers for the first game and if we lost, I’m not sure we would have had the pitching to win the second game. Our players played with a lot of character and bounced back from being behind and gained the runs when we needed them too.”
The Rattlers were down in the first game 13-1 by the end of the second inning. But they fought back to win the first game 22-15. The Rattlers kept the momentum and won the second game 7-5.
The Rattlers went through three pitchers in the first game. They were C.J. Newman, Andrez Apodaca and Drew White.
“I was nervous. It was my first game to pitch (all season) and I knew we needed the win,” said White. “Winning the first game was very important because it took a lot of weight off of our shoulders.”
The Rattlers needed one win to advance to regional play. They had a district record of 3-3 after a split win against the Texico Wolverines on April 24. The Rattlers won the first game against the Wolverines 8-5 and lost the second game 12-6 at Texico.
The Rattlers next game is Friday at noon against the Mesa Vista Trojans of Ojo Caliente at Pecos.
