Urlacher golf tourney: A first for city

By Thomas Garcia

The Tucumcari Golf Course will host the first Brian Urlacher Cross Country Auto Sales Golf Tournament later this month.

The event’s namesake had planned to attend but now finds that he won’t be able to make it, according to the organizers.

“Brian will not be able to attend this tournament because he will be attending a mandatory Bears mini camp,” said John Everhart, manager of Brian Urlacher Cross Country Auto Sales.

Urlacher is a eight-year veteran of the NFL and plays MLB for the Chicago Bears. He purchased the Mills-Strebeck auto dealership in Tucumcari last year.

Everhart said, “We have about 27 teams registered so far and I think the limit is 40 teams.

“We have had teams from Clovis, Albuquerque and Chicago register already. This is the first Brian Urlacher golf tournament and future tournaments will only be held in Tucumcari,” Everhart said.

And if a golfer can pull off a hole in one from the right tee, there will be a chance to win a 2007 GM vehicle at holes 3 and 12 throughout the last two days of the tournament.

“My son James will be at the tournament. He is a PGA pro and for a fee will long drive the ball for players,” said Everhart, adding that James Everhart is the assistant PGA pro at The Painted Dunes in El Paso.

There also will be door prizes golf equipment for winners of other course skills, such as longest drive.

“There will be some NFL players and coaches playing in this tournament,” said Everhart.
All the money raised from the tournament will be donated to the Tucumcari golf team and Rattler athletic programs.
At 5 p.m. on May 18 there will be a shootout.
On May 19-20, the three-person teams will compete for cash and prizes in the tournament.
The cost to enter the tournament is $360 for a three-person team.
The entry pays for green fees and will included a steak dinner at the golf course.
If you don’t have a threesome for a team, PGA pro at the Tucumcari Golf course, will assist entrants in putting together a team.
