07-04-2004: Fishing Report

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Conchas
Fishing was good for anglers using small poppers, worms, minnows and small jigs for bluegill. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using jerk baits, Ricos, senkos, tubes and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using grubs, jigs tipped with minnows, crank baits and bottom bouncers/night crawler rigs. Anglers reported catching several walleye while fishing at night with night crawlers and minnows. Fishing for white bass was fair using crank baits, grubs and minnows. Fishing for catfish was fair using liver and cut bait.

Ute Lake
Fishing was good using Road Runner/minnow combinations for walleye and white bass. Most of the walleye were taken in depths of 20 feet over 30-to-40 feet of water. A few walleye were also taken on deep running crank baits and jigs tipped with minnows. Fishing was fair-to-good using jig/minnow rigs, crank baits, flies, grubs and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing was good using Ricos and tubes for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, minnows and liver at night for catfish. Fishing was very good using small jigs, crank baits, top water lures and worms for bluegill. Fishing for crappie was slow.

Catches of the week
On June 29, Jeremy Flek of Belen caught a 4.5-pound smallmouth bass at Ute Lake. He was using a tube. On June 30, Shannon Tunnell of Belen caught a 6 pound walleye. He was using a Road Runner tipped with a minnow.
