Liberato “Levi” Garcia, 73, a resident of Roy, New Mexico died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in Roy.

He was born in Garita on July 25, 1933 to the late Juan R. Garcia and Rumalda Martinez Garcia who survives him.

He was united in marriage in Trujillo on Feb. 13, 1952 to Conferina “Confie” Gonzales.

Mr. Garcia was a park superintendent for the state’s Parks and Recreation and a lifetime rancher, avid horseman who loved God, family and horses, his family said. He was known in the team roping and rodeo world as a “Living Legend” and he was featured in many magazines.

He set a good example, could easily make friends, was a mentor to many rodeo champions and an inspiration to all that knew him. He had a good sense of humor, and a kind word to all those he touched, his family said.

He was a member of PRCA, U.S.T.R.C., (three-time World Champion Century Roper), NMRA, Rope the Rockies, Original Coors Association, OTRA and the Texas Ropers Association and numerous rodeo associations.

He was an active member of the Holy Family Parish in Roy and served as mayordomo and choir member.

He was preceded in death by his father, Juan R. Garcia; grandparents, Margarito and Donaciana Garcia and grandson, Dathan Garcia.
He is survived by his wife: Confie Garcia of Roy ; mother, Rumalda Garcia of Tucumcari; children: John (Fara) Garcia of Springer , Jimmy (Debra) Garcia and Jeanette Garcia all of Roy, and Danny (Janie) Garcia of Las Vegas, N.M.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Facundo (Helen) Garcia of Tucumcari; aunts: Kana (Abelino) Montoya and Magdalena Lucero all of Albuquerque; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A rosary was recited on Sunday at Holy Family Church in Roy and funeral and memorial services will be were at the Roy High School with Stephen Imbarrato officiating. Burial was at Roy Cemetery. Pallbearers were Levi Garcia, John Paul Garcia, Derek Lovato, Joe Dan Lovato, Blair Clavel, Cody Hazen, Todd Kimble and Bryce Dugger. Serving as honorary bearers will be: Dathan Garcia and Mario Trujillo.
