Quay County high schools and student-athletes were recognized by the New Mexico Activities Association, according to a NMAA press release.

House, Logan, San Jon and Tucumcari high schools received the NMAA’s Award of Excellence for Exemplary Display of Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity. The award recognizes schools that completed the 2006-2007 sports season without a report of a negative incident. Fifty-six schools received the award. This is the second consecutive year House High School has received this honor.

This award is part of the NMAA’s Pursuing Victory with Honor program, a national Character Counts program for sports, said NMAA assistant director Robert Zayas. Only a third of the schools in New Mexico received this award, said Zayas.

“This program is important because it promotes good sportsmanship and develops positive role models,” said Zayas.

“The high school athlete might not have a role model but often they are a role model to younger players in their schools.”
