The House Cowboys and Cowgirls are gearing up for the fall sports season.
The Cowboys will be returning to the gridiron as 6-man football returns to House.
In 2006 House’s football program was canceled by Athletic Director Art Brokenbek when the school could not find a coach.
Steve Foust, who had coached the Cowboys football team in 2005, resigned to take a coaching position in Capitan.
This year the Cowboys will be coached by House’s new Athletic Director Wes Weems.
There will be 10-to-15 players this year in the football program and we will be starting two-a-days on Aug. 13, said Weems.
“Several of the athletes are excited that we will have football in House this year,” said Weems. “Many of the players were disappointed that we could not offer the program last year and are happy to see it return.”
Weems said he is looking forward to both coaching and fulfilling his role as athletic director .
“It will be a challenge being head coach and athletic director,” said Weems. “I will have to make sure that there are enough officials and staff for both fall sports.”
Part of Weems’ upcoming duties as athletic director, he said, will be to meet with the new volleyball coach, Marcie LeGrand to discuss schedules and rosters.
Both programs have the potential to be successful this year, said Weems.
“We have three seniors that are returning on the volleyball team and a good core group that will help us be competitive,” said Weems.
“The boys are excited and ready to play football. We will just have to start out playing our best and make adjustments to our opponents as the season progresses.”
