Rattlers to begin two-a-days

The Tucumcari Rattlers football team is getting ready for the upcoming season.

Two-a-day practices will begin Monday and full-contact practice will start on Thursday. The annual Purple and Gold Scrimmage will be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, said coach Dub Smith.

The Rattlers could be ranked in the top four in 2A football this year, said Smith.

“There is a potential for four teams in our district to be ranked in the top four of 2A football,” said Smith

It could shape up with Lordsburg ranked first as they have many of their starters returning this year, Santa Rosa in second, Tucumcari ranked in at third and Texico at fourth, said Smith.

“We have an outstanding schedule this year with six home games and look forward to the people coming out and supporting their Rattler football team.”

There will be some coaching changes this year in Rattler football, said Smith.

These include:
l John Span as defensive coach and secondary coach
l Eddie Encinias as running back coach and special teams coach
l Bryan Dunlap as offensive and defensive line coach.
The Rattlers junior high team will also have staffing changes:
l Tim Clark will be the offensive and defensive line coach
l Donnie Garcia will be the backs coach.

“Coach Wayne Ferguson will be concentrating on his work as athletic director this year,” said Smith.

“Coaches Encinias and Dunlap are moving up from the junior high to the varsity full time and we are excited to what they will contribute. I think that coach Clark and Garcia will do a fine job with the junior high team,” Smith said.

“The Rattlers lost several quality players but have a great bunch of players coming back this year,” said Smith.
Here’s what Smith had to say about the new team:

l Senior Andrez Apodaca will be stepping up as quarterback and should be one of the best quarterbacks in the state, said Smith.
l Andre DeBord will play fullback and linebacker. He played back up to Brian Lopez and has a lot of heart and is a go getter, said Smith.
l Tyler Cordova and Jospeh Quintana should be two of the best tackles in the state this year, said Smith.
l Jospeh Enriquez and Michael Martinez both played as alternates as offensive guards last year and got a lot of experience that will benefit them this year.
l “We lost an all-state kicker senior Anas Badshah but look forward to Rich Encinias being our kicker and feel he has the potential to be another all-state kicker,” said Smith.
l Ryan Fought will be playing as a running back, Adrian Prieto will be a wide receiver and running back, Michael Fazekas will play as a receiver and center Curtis Simpson is a returning starter, said Smith.

Players are to be on the field 10 minutes before practice begins, said Coach Dub Smith.
