Birthdays, Seaman completes basic, Santa Fe Trail race

Brotherly love…
Robert is finally a big brother. Baby sister Aliyah Roberta Marez was born July 25, 2007 at 5:03 p.m. in Albuquerque. She weighed 6.1 pounds and was 17 1/2 inches long. Her parents are Jose and Veronica Marez of Tucumcari. Other family includes her brothers: Paul Marez and Lara, and niece Adaeus of Tucumcari and Jose Marez Jr. and Cassandra of Albuquerque. Her grandparents are Antonia Marez and James and Lucy Kleinsasser, all of Tucumcari.

First station Whidbey…
Navy Seaman Christopher D. Purcell recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., according to a Navy news release.
He is a 1999 graduate of Grady High School and a 2004 graduate of Eastern New Mexico University. Purcell is the son of Peggy A. and Ricky D. Purcell and the grandson of Leona Fay Purcell Mayfield, all of Tucumcari.
During the eight-week program, Purcell completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. Am emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
Purcell is now stationed at Whidbey Island, Wash.

Richard and Jennifer Lewis of Tucumcari are proud to announce the birth of their son, Jesse Margarito Diesel Lewis, who was born July 17, 2007 in Lubbock. He weighed three pounds, 15 ounces at birth and has been steadily gaining. In fact, he now weighs 8 pounds, 11 ounces and is 19 1/2 inches long. Jesse’s grandparents are Julia and Joe Jasper of Tucumcari and Cheryl Marvin of California.

Team Liberty on the trail…
Team Liberty – which is making a 515-mile trek across the Santa Fe Trail in the great endurance race – continues to hold its own, said Gail Owen. Owen relayed the news via her husband, Dereck Owen, who is part of team’s support staff.
The riders, Dawson Higgins and Shawn Davis, have been coming in between first and fourth in their daily rides of about 50 miles, Gail Owen said.
Dereck Owen, who is caring for the resting horses and driving support, is also being joined by his father George Owen of Channing, Texas, and his grandfather, Tommy Fickling of Clovis, said Gail Owen.
