Competing in the first college rodeo of the year, the Mesalands Community College Rodeo team fared well at the Cochise College Rodeo in Douglas, Ariz. The team was represented by 20 contestants in the Grand Canyon Regional Rodeo.

The Mesalands men’s team placed fourth overall in the team standings behind strong showings with the rough stock riders. The men’s team was represented by seven rough stock contestants and eight timed event contestants. The women’s team was represented by five contestants.

Dominic Coche a freshman bull rider made an impressive ride in the first round to place second in the first round. Coche also placed second in the average after all of the bull riders in the short round were bucked off a strong pen of bulls.

Jon Luse also turned in a strong performance in the bareback riding with a second in the first round, Luse also placed fourth in the bareback riding average.

On the women’s team, Andrea Ortiz, a freshman from Tucumcari, placed 10th in the breakaway roping.

“Our team has a lot of potential for the 2007-2008 season” said rodeo coach C.J. Aragon.

“The students have been working really hard and improving each day. We have a month until our next rodeo, so we hope to get everyone healthy and send our full team to the next rodeo,” Aragon said.

A new program has also been added for the 2007-2008 rodeo season called the Mesalands Community College Rodeo Students of the Month sponsored by Wrangler Shirts and Jeans, Aragon said.

The male student of the month is Kerneil Nih. While Nih only competes in team roping, he has become an invaluable resource for the rodeo team through his efforts to contribute to all aspects of the team.

Tamara Drake is the female student of the month. Drake’s action speak louder than words, Aragon said. Drake is very successful in the classroom and has been improving steadily in the arena.

“We are very proud of the efforts of Kerneil and Tamara. They exemplify what we look for in our student athletes, and we are pleased to reward their efforts with Wrangler gift certificates,” Aragon said.

The team’s next competition is Oct. 26-27 in Tsaile, Ariz.
