The new Sonic restaurant under construction on South First Street is expected to open by the end of November, said a Merritt Group spokesperson.
“The company did a review of traffic in Tucumcari and found that a location along First Street would be optimal,” said Donna Volz, regional marketing director for the Merritt Group based in Los Cruces. The Merritt Group operates Sonic restaurants in New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona.
At the new location there will be a drive-through window.
It will be be aesthetically pleasing to visitors with a new color scheme, menu designs and two patio areas for people to dine, Volz said. “We want to create a pleasant environment for those eating in their cars or on the patios,” she said.
Employment will also increase about 25 to 35 percent, Volz said. Currently, the Sonic on West Tucumcari Boulevard has 25 employees and jobs are expected to increase to 35, said Ron Carmichael, Sonic restaurant manager in Tucumcari.
Once the new restaurant building is completed, the Sonic at South Seventh Street and West Tucumcari Boulevard will be closed and operations will begin at the new location, Carmichael said.
