The 2-11 Tucumcari Lady Rattlers fell in three to the 5-10 Santa Rosa Lady Lions.
The Lady Rattlers lost their second district match up, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19 to the Lady Lions Thursday at Tucumcari.
“I am very pleased with tonight’s performance in a district match up with Santa Rosa,” said Lady Rattlers coach Tony Alarcon. “Our team’s mechanics went a lot smoother. We just need to minimize mistakes and cut down on side outs.”
The Lady Rattlers had the chance to see the Lady Lions in action during the Melrose Tournament on Oct. 6. The Lady Lions finished sixth in the tournament and the Lady Rattlers placed seventh.
The first two sets were closely played. At the end of the first set, however, there were few errors and side outs. Within three points, the Lady Rattlers were set for sophomore Kristen Rich to sub in and were caught off guard for the final point when a serve from Lady Lions sophomore Sara Tapia came over the net for a 25-21 finish.
The second set’s score resembled a ping-pong match as the teams exchanged a one-point lead for the first 15 points. The Lady Lions pulled ahead by three points with kills from sophomore Denika Flores. Back-to-back aces by Lady Rattlers sophomore Diedra Lopez put them within two at 19-21, but the final score was 25-22.
In the final set, the Lady Rattlers had a short-lived lead at the beginning. Then a few miscommunications lead to points for the Lady Lions. The Lady Rattlers tried to rally after strong serves from junior Kaitlin Lopez but fell short at 25-19.
“We played a lot better then we have before,” Lopez said. “We just need to play harder and move our feet.”
The Lady Rattlers will face the undefeated 15-0 Texico Lady Wolverines next.
“We need to work harder in practice to prepare for the match up,” said junior Kadi Powers.
Kaitlin Lopez 3 kills and 7 aces
Renae Roybal 12 kills and 1 ace
The Lady Rattlers next game is at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday against the Lady Wolverines at Tucumcari.
