Food commodities …
Commodities are expected in November, said an official of the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico, based in Clovis.
The food bank serves nine counties by distributing the commodities released by the U.S. government through its TEFAP program, or The Emergency Food Assistance Program.
Food items are delivered to the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico from Albuquerque. The food bank then sorts and delivers items to forty agency sites on the eastern side of the state, according to a foodbank press release.
They do not receive any funding from the government to deliver these items. The money to furnish and fuel the trucks, and pay the driver and the warehouse people, comes from donations and from organizations such as the United Way, the release said.
In House, Logan, Nara Visa, San Jon and Tucumcari, the USDA commodities are distributed from the House Community Pantry, Logan Emergency Food Panty, Nara Visa Community Center, San Jon Senior Meal and Tucumcari Seniors.
Visit a ghost town …
The Tucumcari Historical Research Institute will have a field trip for its members to the Wind River Ranch on the Mora River, then up the river to the ghost town of Loma Parda where soldiers from nearby Fort Union went on liberty. From there, the group will go to Fort Union for a picnic and a tour of the Fort.
The group will leave the museum at 416 S. Adams at 8 a.m on Nov. 3
Passport for Quay …
Some tourists think that they need a passport to come to New Mexico, so the Quay County Tourism Council is developing a passport for Quay County. The passport is a fun way for tourists to drop by businesses that they might not normally visit. Tourists will be encouraged to get each page in their Quay County Passport stamped by stopping by the business on that page.
The tourism council is putting together the booklet for a cost of $75 to have your business listed in a six-month supply of passports which will be distributed through the New Mexico Visitor Information Centers, Chamber of Commerce, motels and other tourist related businesses.
