The Tucumcari Rattlers, seeded sixth in Class 2A, have a rematch with Loving this weekend.
The Rattlers (5-5) will host the 11th-seeded Falcons in what will be their second matchup this season. Tucumcari claimed a victory in the first game, 48-0 Sept. 28 on the road.
In that game, the Rattlers scored five times in the first half, totaled five rushing touchdowns and had both a fumble and an interception return for touchdowns. However, Tucumcari coach Dub Smith said the team is preparing for a tougher rematch.
“Loving’s quarterback Frank Alan Ornelas can throw and run the football well,” Smith said. “We will work on containing him and playing four quarters of solid football.”
Although he likes the seeding system because, “it ensures that the top to football teams will compete in the state championship,” Smith had concerns the Rattlers, at 5-5, might have ended up seeded in the bottom half of the playoff tree, and thus would have opened the playoffs on the road.
With the No. 6 seed, he doesn’t have to worry.
“It is great that we will play at home and not on the road for the first round of the playoffs,” Smith said. “We play some great football when we are at home and look forward to a packed house.”
