The 2A Tucumcari Lady Rattlers basketball team have been conditioning and preparing for their season opener Saturday against the 2A Raton Lady Tigers. It will be the first game for the junior varsity and varsity teams.
And each of the teams will be entering the season with a new coach.
“The team is adjusting to a new system well,” Hittson said. “I am the third coach that the team has had in three years and learning a new system can be challenging. I would like the team to come away with increased self-esteem.”
Hittson replaces Wayne Ferguson, the Rattlers athletic director, who said he wanted to devote more time to his primary role as athletic director and especially since the school is in the process of improving and constructing new sports facilities.
The JV will be coached this year by Kerri Bollinger, who said she is anticipating a good match up to start out the season.
“Working hard and playing consistent is the main focus of the team,” Bollinger said. “I would like them to take what they learn in practice and apply it in game.”
Bollinger replaces Annie Filpi who is teaching full time at the Tucumcari Middle School.
The Rattlers basketball team is also in training. Their first game of the season is Dec. 15 at the Route 66 Classic in Tucumcari.
The Lady Rattlers play at 5 p.m. Saturday against the Raton Lady Tigers at Raton.
