Liberato “Lee” Melquiades Roybal

Services: 9 a.m. today, a funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas.

Liberato “Lee” Melquiades Roybal, 71, a lifelong resident of Variadero died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007. He was born on Oct. 29, 1936 to the late Reducindo Roybal and Tomasita Tenorio Roybal in Terrero.

He was united in marriage to Gloria Garcia in Tucumcari on Oct. 10, 1955, in a double wedding with cousins, Leo and Alice Roybal as the other couple. Soon after, they all moved to Downey, Calif., where they lived for nine years.

They moved after that to the family ranch in Variadero, where he was a lifelong rancher. He loved his horses and cows and he also loved to rodeo in his younger days. He was also a roofer, mechanic, carpenter and a welder. He received an award from the Tierras Y Montes Soil Conservation.

He was preceded in death by his parents Reducindo Roybal in 1990; Tomasita Tenorio Roybal in 1995; brother: George Roybal in 1972; sister: Julia Roybal Quintana in 1997; brother-in-law; Juan Quintana Jr.; uncles: Eugenio Roybal and Gilbert Roybal; aunt: Gabina Roybal; cousins: Dolores Roybal, Henry Roybal, Ruben Roybal and Lorenzo Roybal.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years: Gloria Roybal of Variadero, son: Joseph (Sara) Roybal of Las Vegas; daughter: Jennifer (Tim) Strahl of Rociada; four grandchildren: Bernard, Sabrina, Samantha and Steven Roybal; numerous other relatives and friends.

C. John Brasher will be the celebrant at the service.. Serving as casket bearers will be: Toby Garcia, Francisco Gallegos, Leo Roybal, Isidro Pacheco, J.R. Gallegos and Juanito Quintana III. Serving as honorary bearers: Justin Gonzales, Bernard Roybal, Johnny Roybal, Elmo Pacheco, Samantha, Steven and Sabrina Roybal. Cremation will follow after services with interment at a later date at the Roybal Family Cemetery in Trementina.
