Birthdays, New Year’s Population, State Beautification

She’s a Christmas presence…
Rachel Eve Mardo was born Christmas day in Clovis. She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces. Rachel Eve is the daughter of Laura and David Mardo of Tucumcari. She joins two brothers, Davey, 7, and Nathaniel, 4, and a sister, Sariah, 2. Her grandparents are Joe and Judy Martinez of Tucumcari, Frances Parras of Carlsbad and Dave and Nancy Mardo of Lemitar.

Drum roll for Felimon…
On Friday, Felimon R. Chavez of Tucumcari celebrated his 22nd birthday. Family and friends wish him the best, including his parents Charlie and Bertha Chavez, his sisters, Sonya and Charlene, and grandparents, Mable Chavez and Raymond Chavez, all of Tucumcari. Felimon Chavez, who has played the drums since he was 8 years old, now plays with the El Joven & Chavez Bros. Band.

New Year’s population…
As our nation prepares to ring in the new year, the U.S. Census Bureau has projected the Jan. 1, 2008, population will be 303,146,284 — up 2,842,103 or 0.9 percent from New Year’s Day 2007, according to a bureau press release.
In January, the United States is expected to register one birth every eight seconds and one death every 11 seconds, the release said.
Meanwhile, net international migration is expected to add one person every 30 seconds. The result is an increase in the total U.S. population of one person every 13 seconds, according to the release.

State beautification…
Keep New Mexico Beautiful Inc. (KNMB) is extending its deadline for 2008 grant applications to Jan. 14, according to a press release.
KNMB provides grants for organizations, schools, civic groups, and local governments to conduct projects to beautify and improve their public facilities and spaces. KNMB offers grants in five categories: (1) Arbor Day, 2) KNMB Month, (3) Native Plant and Landscaping, (4) Solid Waste, Litter Control and Recycling, and (5) Education.

Holiday light honors…
Winners of the 2007 Parade of Lights and the Commercial and Residential contests will be recognized by the contest sponsor, the Tucumcari/Quay Chamber of Commerce, at a luncheon on Jan. 15.
