Coach Dunlap honored
Tucumcari Rattlers coach Bryan Dunlap was honored at the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association’s clinic on Jan. 11 in Albuquerque.
Dunlap, who is Tucucmari’s assistant track team coach, was awarded the 2007 2A Assistant Coach of the Year award. Dunlap coaches Rattlers discus, javelin and shot put competitors.
Dunlap was nominated for the award by Tucumcari Athletic Director Wayne Ferguson.
“I nominated both of my assistant coaches because they did an outstanding job with the kids last year,” Ferguson said. “Bryan is the throwing coach and he had five boys and one girl who placed at state competition last year.”
“I appreciate that Coach Ferguson nominated me,” Dunlap said. “I worked with an outstanding group of kids. Every every meet that we went to, it felt good to hear the other teams say, ‘Here comes Tucumcari.’”
Dunlap was taken by complete surprise when his name was announced, Ferguson said. His award was the last to be handed out in that category.
“I was in disbelief,” Dunlap said. “Coach Ferguson had to tell me to go get my award.”

Rattlers named to All State, North teams
Rattler seniors Andre DeBord and Michael Fazekas were chosen for the 2007 2A All State football team. The selection was made recently by a panel of 15 2A football coaches
“It is great to be recognized by other coaches across the state,” Fazekas said. Wide receiver Fazekas received an honorable mention for offense.
“It feels good to know that other coaches noticed and remembered how I played during the season,” DeBord said. Running back DeBord was named to offense on the second team
“It is a real honor for these young men to be selected as part of the All State team,” said Rattlers football coach Dub Smith. “It compliments the coaches and Rattler football program when our players are recognized.”
Members of the the North Vs South A/AA All-Star football team were also announced.
Rattlers named to the offense are tackle Michael Martinez and quarterback Andrez Apodaca. Rattlers named to defense are linemen Andre DeBord and Michael Fazekas.
The game will be on June 7 at Silver City.

Chavarria named THS golf coach
The Rattlers golf team will be led this year by a new head coach and an assistant coach, said Tucumcari Athletic Director Wayne Ferguson.
“Adrian Chavarria has been named the head coach of Tucumcari Rattlers golf team,” Ferguson said. “Matt Montoya will also be helping out with the program as a volunteer.”
“I truly enjoy working with kids and playing golf, so being able to help the team out and becoming the coach was an easy decision,” Chavarria said.
The Rattlers were without a coach when head coach Howie Tucker, PGA professional at the Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course, resigned in December to be the pro at the golf course at Truth or Consequences.
Chavarria, who has a handicap of 6, tries to compete in as many tournaments as possible during the summer and hits the course at least three times a week, he said.
“My work schedule prevents me from playing as much golf as I would like to,” Chavarria said. “Luckily, I have been able to adjust my schedule around practices and also I will be able to work with the team during physical education class.”
Chavarria recently completed a coaching clinic and has applied for coaching license, he said.
“I am very excited to have the chance to help coach the kids this year,” said Montoya. “I played golf for the Rattlers team when I was in high school and look forward to helping the players develop and improve their skills.”
