Single-vehicle accident claims life of Tucumcari teen

By Thomas Garcia

A Tucumcari teen died Saturday morning in a single-vehicle accident in eastern De Baca County, said State Police Lt. Cleo Baker.

Robert Marquez, 15, was driving a 1986 Jeep Cherokee south on State Highway 252 about 10 miles south of House about 8 a.m. when the vehicle left the road and rolled over 1 1/2 times, Baker said. Marquez was trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, Baker said.

Baker said Marquez drifted off the highway, overcorrected and crossed the road several times before losing control.

A passenger, Richard Garcia, 18, of Tucumcari was transported to a nearby hospital, treated and released, Baker said.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing their seat belts and alcohol was not a factor in the accident, Baker said.

Marquez is the son of Robert and Leeann Marquez of Tucumcari.

Marquez was a sophomore at Tucumcari High School where he was a member of the Varsity Golf Team and Student Council.

Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, a funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Rose of Lima. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Santa Rosa.
