Sweethearts to say ‘I do’ on Valentine’s Day

Felicia Rodriguez and Doug Ashcraft will become husband and wife Thursday – Valentine’s Day.

Ashcraft said he’s had a  crush on Rodriguez since he was 18.

“I bet I’ve asked her out a 1,000 times,” he said.

Circumstances took them along different paths, until 2006 and the day before Thanksgiving.

It seems cupid or Saint Valentine had only been on vacation, and Ashcraft, 27, began, again, asking Rodriguez, 32, to marry him.

But she kept saying, “No.”

She said she wouldn’t say “yes” if she automatically had a question in her mind

She said she initially thought he was too young. Not enough life experience. So, it took some persistence and persuading on Ashcraft’s part.

And on Feb. 2, he asked her again. Perhaps, it was Saint Valentine who made sure that no doubting question popped into Rodriquez’s head.

She said, “Yes.”

On Sunday, the couple got the ring, a pear shaped diamond engagement ring.

On Monday, the couple got their marriage license.

At 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, yes, Valentine’s Day, Felicia Rodriguez and Doug Ashcraft will exchange their vows before  Municipal Court Judge Joe Dominguez.

“We’ll be able to celebrate two things on one day, our wedding anniversaries and Valentine’s Day,” Rodriguez said.

But they’ll also continue to celebrate the day before and the day after. Because the birth date of Rodriguez’s mother is Feb. 13 and Ashcraft’s mother is Feb. 15.

“We’ve got a way, now, to remember almost everybody’s birthday,” Rodriguez said.

Oh, the things that Saint Valentine can arrange. Just so his day and birthdays won’t be forgotten.
