Mother Nature launched the first strikes at Friday’s Fourth of July fireworks display in Tucumcari.
Lighting crisscrossed the sky from the north and west as dark thunderheads rolled in before the display began.
The storm and its eventual rain, however, didn’t dampen any spirits.
What two-year-old Harley Ray McKinney said she liked best about the evening was the “boom.”
“We got here late but it was nice,” said Liz McKinney, who watched with friends and family from the car as the rain fell.
The Elks put on the annaul event, with a warm up from neighbors who occassionally launched their own cascades before dark.
The city of Tucumcari contributed about $5,000 to the evening’s display.
