Literacy advocate
to meet with teachers
On Monday the faculty and staff of Tucumcari Public Schools will hear a presentation from John Corcoran, a former teacher and businessman whose personal story is both shocking and inspiring.
Corcoran struggled in school and never learned to read. Instead, he figured out ways to “beat the system.”
His deception got him through high school and college and ultimately secured him a teaching position!
It wasn’t until later in life, after years of teaching high school English and social studies, that Corcoran finally admitted his illiteracy.
He then not only learned to read but became a champion of literacy.
His book, “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,” is consideed a testament to the importance of literacy.
“Tucumcari Public Schools wants every student to be a successful reader,” said Assistant Superintendent Dennis Roch, “and Mr. Corcoran’s message will help us see the danger of letting even one child slip through the cracks.”
Corcoran’s address is at 10 a.m. at the Tucumcari Convention Center.
