Quay County 4-Hers brought home a first place win last week from the First Annual Family Consumer Sciences Classic competitions in Denver, Colo. Participating in the Third Annual Family Consumer Science Bowl on Jan. 8-11 were Chris Arias, Taylor Atwood, Patrick Wiegel and Carmen Runyan.
The team was accompanied by Coaches Brenda Bishop, Quay County Extension Home Economist, and Joyce Runyan, Roadrunner 4-H Club leader.
“It was really fun getting to meet people from around the nation and Canada. I wish there was an international competition,” said Arias.
The competition was similar to the TV game show Jeopardy, Arias said.
“It was fun competing against other people out of New Mexico, said Atwood.
Team Leader Runyan said, “Back in July we said we would come and win and we did and now we’re national champions.”
They won the opportunity to represent New Mexico by winning the state competition in July.
At the national competition, they were the first place team, with Runyan taking the high point individual, Arias placing second high point individual, and Atwood placing fourth high point individual.
“These 4-Hers set as a goal to win the state and national competitions over a year ago. They have studied hard with regular practices since January 2008 and their hard work paid off,” Bishop said.
