Rose Parade performer, college honors, new arrival, Altrusa woman of the year

Former Tucumcarian, Danielle Chavez, was among those who performed in the 120th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day in Pasadina, California. Danielle is a member of the Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) High School Band and Color Guard. The group has competed at the national level on numerous occasions. As a result, they were invited to perform in the parade. Danielle’s parents are Billy and Monica Chavez of Broken Arrow. Her grandparents are Paul and Jolly Chavez and the late Manuel and Billie Griego of Tucumcari.

Jon W. Manning was inducted into the Beta Eta Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Mesalands Community College on Dec. 19. Manning, who is from Tucumcari, is majoring in Wind Energy Technology. He is the son of Holland “Buddy” Manning and Karen Manning of Tucumcari .

Ellen Shankles was named the 2008 Altrusa Retired Woman of the Year at the Altrusa Christmas Party. Ellen was an executive vice president
when she retired in September 2008 after 47 years at the Tucumcari Citizens Bank .

Dec. 5. She weighed 6 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19 inches long. She was welcomed home by her big sister Emery. Her grandparents are
Mike and Jody Barnes of Tucumcari, Rick and Eva Bellows of Littlefield, Texas, and her great-grandparents are Jim and Nettie Watson of
Junction, Texas, Donald and Leah Bames of Fort Sumner and Francis and the late Ben Contreras of Littlefield, Texas. Her godparents are Alexi Balch of Lewisville, Texas, and Billy Bowerman
of Amarillo.

Caitlyn Romero, a 2008 graduate of THS, earned “semester honors” for the fall 2008 semester at Kansas State University where she is a student in the College of Agriculture. Caitlyn is the daughter of Carlos and Niva Romero and the late Sharon Romero.
