Rattlers triumph over Logan

The Tucumcari Rattlers baseball beat the Logan Longhorns 18-0 Tuesday at Tucumcari.

The Rattlers put the game out of reach in the bottom of the second inning by taking a 13-0 lead.

Freshman Angelo Montano hit a strong shot to the right field which resulted in an inside-the-park grand slam.

“I was watching the ball looking for the pitch that I wanted,” Montano said. “As the pitch came I started to swing and got a good rip on it. I was watching the ball as I was running to (third) base. I looked over at coach and he gave me to signal to keep going.”

That inning, the youth of the Longhorns team and a lack of depth in pitching led to the blowout.

“Our team is young, we only have one junior,” said Logan coach B.J. Molinas. “Our pitchers need to work on their fundamentals and learn to be patient out there”

The (4-2) Rattlers needed the confidence boost that came with the win, following Monday’s 11-10 loss at Texico.

“We gave them that game,” Rattler coach Tony Alarcon said. “Texico had two out, two strikes and all we had to do was (get) one last out. Errors, that is what did us in.”

Alarcon said that it was a missed out from a pop fly to the shortstop that tied the game and a two-run shot from junior Seth Bailey ended it in the bottom of the fifth on a wind-shortened contest.

“The game was only going five innings because of the weather and we knew that,” Alarcon said. “All we needed to do was play smart and get the outs.”

The Rattlers will play on Thursday at the Santa Rosa Lion Classic tournament.
