State Rep. Dennis Roch (R-Tucumcari) said Friday he was appointed as a voting member of the Legislative Education Study Committee, one of several interim legislative committees which meet between legislative sessions.

“This committee was my first choice,” Roch said, “and I’m pleased that my colleagues recognized the contributions I can make to education policy in New Mexico because of my experience as both a classroom teacher and district administrator.”

Among his top goals for the committee is ensuring that the revised public school funding formula is adopted and fully funded, Roch said.

Funding of the new formula would provide significant support for all state schools, but especially those rural schools who have been hardest hit by reductions in state funding.

Interim committee appointments are made by the Legislative Council, which consists of the Democratic and Republican leaders from the House and Senate.
