The victim of a June 1 shooting in Tucumcari died Monday night following weeks in intensive care.

Howard Russell King, 45, died at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, said Donald Schutte, family attorney.

Schutte said King was in an Amarillo hospital soon after the shooting, then moved to a rehabilitation hospital in Albuquerque. He was moved to Presbyterian when his condition worsened about two weeks ago, Schutte said.

Relatives took King to Tucumcari’s Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital when he was shot while moving out of the Redwood Lodge.

He told police he was shot by Robert W. “Chief” Wynashe, who managed the lodge.

Family members said King had been in intensive care and was paralyzed as a result of the shooting.

Wynashe is being held on $1 million bond at Quay County Detention Center where he faces an attempted murder charge.

“The state will not make any decision to pursue murder charges until we speak with the pathologist and review the autopsy reports,” state prosecutor Orlando Torres said on Tuesday.
