Connie Chavez of Mesalands Community College will receive the 2009 Western Regional Professional Board Staff Member Award from the Association of Community College Trustees, according to a Mesalands news release.
She is scheduled to attend the 40th Annual ACCT meeting scheduled Oct. 7-10 in San Franciso.
As the administrative assistant to the college president, Chavez has demonstrated her dedication and commitment to the community college philosophy, the release said.
Chavez is the first point of contact for the college’s Board of Trustees.
“She not only provides service to the college’s many constituents, but also has grown into a leader,” the news release said.
Chavez graduated from Mesalands Community College in 2005 with an associate degree in business office technology. She is scheduled to graduate in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Franklin University.
The news release reports:
• Chavez was instrumental in the passage of a $7 million voter approved facility for the North American Wind Research and Training Center (NAWRTC) and assisted in special legislative appropriations for the college’s new 1.5 megawatt wind turbine.
• She plans, organizes and executes the annual Mardi Gras Cajun Shrimp Boil Fundraiser, which has raised more than $79,000 the past three years.
