Lady Coyotes to play Lady Bronchos for district title

The San Jon Lady Coyotes have advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. District 4-1A championship game at Grady.

“We need to stay calm and do what we do,” said Lady Coyotes senior Morgan Foster. “If we play our game we can beat Grady.”

The third-ranked Coyotes are the last Quay County volleyball team still in the district playoffs. They continue their postseason run after Thursday night’s 3-0 victory over the second-ranked Logan Lady Longhorns in Logan

“They were mentally prepared for this game,” said Lady Longhorn senior Jessica Aguilera. “I think the coach was right, we were playing not to lose and not playing to win.”

The first two games were close set matches (25-19, 25-21) with the lead changing several times due to errors by both teams.

“I told the girls to calm down,” said San Coach Tyra Davis. “I told them to think about every play and do not waste a kill shot when it presents itself.”

The advice seemed to have sunk in as the Lady Coyotes jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the third and final match. The Lady Longhorns kept playing and took advantage of errors from San Jon to stay in the game.

“We have been working on not making errors and beating ourselves,” said Lady Coyotes senior Tracy Foote. “We knew that we just needed to stay positive and not give up those easy points.”

Despite Logan’s efforts to make a comeback and force a fourth game San Jon won the match 25-12.
