The 10th-seeded Tucumcari Rattlers will take on No. 7-seed Dexter at 7 p.m. Friday in Dexter in the first round of the Class 2A state football playoffs.
“If we play like we know we can, we will win,” said Rattlers head coach Daniel Hutchins. “We just have to limit our errors on the field. The fact is we are beating ourselves when we lose.”
Hutchins feels the key to the game will be controlling the clock, which was Dexter’s game plan when the teams met on Oct. 9.
Tucumcari won that matchup 21-20.
“We need to stop the run,” said Tucumcari sophomore David Pacheco. “They like to run, we know that, and we are going to do our best to take that away from them.”
Tucumcari is 5-5 on the season, but has lost three in a row. Dexter is 3-7 for the year, but riding a three-game win streak.
Hutchins said the Rattlers have lost no players due to grade eligibility. He said that speaks volumes of the coaches, players and teaching staff.
“That is the type of hard work and dedication we are looking for,” Hutchins said. “We are excited to be playing in the tournament and want to take the team far this year.”
San Jon takes on Hondo
The San Jon Coyotes will be playing at 5 p.m. Friday at Hondo in the first round of the six-man state playoffs.
The Coyotes beat Vaughn 42-12 on Friday to earn a spot in the four-team state bracket, which also includes Roy/Wagon Mound and Lake Arthur.
The Coyotes go into Friday’s matchup with a 5-4 record. The Hondo Eagles are 8-1.
