The San Jon Lady Coyotes have reached the state volleyball playoffs for the first time in 17 years.
They play at Springer at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the Class 1A tournament.
“We will be working all week on limiting mistakes,” said Lady Coyotes head coach Tyra Davis.
Davis said the last time the Lady Coyotes, 9-12, were in the state volleyball playoffs was 1992.
The long bus trip to Springer could impact the match’s outcome, but Davis said her team can compete with the 17-4 Lady Red Devils.
“They (Lady Coyotes) know how to play,” Davis said. “They have the skills and heart to compete against this team.”
“I am going to do my best to keep the girls focused on the game,” Davis said. “Shut out all the negative thoughts and just concentrate on winning the game, not looking forward or wondering what if. We simply need to focus on the here and now.”
Davis said keeping the team upbeat and working on the passing and coverage will be her main priority throughout the week.
“This team has come a long way and now we just need to finish what we started,” Davis said.
