Family, friends and students attended the funeral Tuesday for Kevin Severance, a freshman science teacher at Tucumcari High School.

“Severance had only been teaching at Tucumcari High School for one semester,” said Dennis Roch, assistant superintendent. “Even with his short time at Tucumcari schools, Mr. Severance made a significant impact on students and facility.”

High school students were dismissed at 1 p.m. and many attended the funeral of their former teacher.

“There has been a tremendous outpouring of support for the family from the students,” Roch said.

Roch said the school made counselors available Monday at the high school for the students and faculty.

Severance died in a one vehicle crash Dec. 31 in Union County.

The accident occurred at 10:57 p.m. at Dr. Michael Jenkins Road and U.S. 87.

Police said Severance was southbound on Dr. Michael Jenkins Road and drove through the intersection, striking a guardrail. Police said his vehicle continued through a ditch, slamming into a railroad bridge.

Severance was taken to Union County General Hospital by the Clayton Fire and Rescue. He was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. Jan. 1.

The accident is still an ongoing investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
