Volunteers needed for local animal group

A local animal group is seeking volunteers to find homes for rescued dogs.

“Over 50 dogs in need of a second chance have found homes thanks to the efforts of the city’s animal rescue group,” said Christina Fleming, rescue volunteer.

Fleming said the City of Tucumcari Volunteer Animal Rescue Group has managed to find loving homes for many dogs. She said being listed on Petfinder.com has helped locate homes for the animals.

“We have received e-mails, calls and letters from people who have adopted a dog,” Fleming said. “One owner sent us a DVD of their dog’s first Christmas in their new home.”

Kimberly Casara, of Taos, adopted a springer mix named Cowboy.

“This has been a great experience,” Casara replied in an email. “Cowboy is wonderful and is as smart as a whip. I wish I had room for more but I already have three dogs, including Cowboy.”

Despite the group’s success Fleming said more local volunteers are needed.

“We have over 50 dogs that are looking for a home,” Fleming said. “The problem is that we do not have enough volunteers to take pictures of all the dogs and upload them to the Petfinder.com Web site.”

Fleming said being able to list all the dogs available on Petfinder.com would increase adoption rates.

Currently there are nine dogs from Tucumcari that are listed on the Petfinder.com.

Fleming said the city plans to hold rescue licensing classes at Mesalands Community College in March and April.

“To operate or volunteer at a rescue shelter you must be licensed by the city,” Fleming said. “There is policy and a process that the volunteers must learn and follow.”

Fleming said offering the class to the public may draw in more volunteers or those interested in starting a rescue shelter themselves.

There is a $100 adoption fee which covers the animals spaying or neutering and checkup with shots.
