A Logan Longhorns football player will be making the transition from District 4-8-man to NCAA Division II action.

Josh Ruda, a senior at Logan High School, signed a letter of intent to attend Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla.

“I have dreamed of playing at the next level since I was a kid,” Ruda said. “It is a honor, not a lot of people get a chance to put the helmet back on and play.”

Ruda said he was invited to OPSU and spent time with offensive coordinator Seth Womack and receivers coach Teron Guidry.

“Ruda is the type of player they are looking for in a fullback,” Womack said during a phone interview Monday. “He is a great kid with good character. He is someone we want on the team.”

Womack said even as a freshman he thinks Ruda will be able compete with the other players at the fullback position.

Ruda moved to Logan at the start of the school year from Prescott Valley, Ariz.

“I started playing football when I was 7 years old in the Pop Warner League,” Ruda said.

Before playing as a Longhorn, Ruda said he played for Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley, Ariz.

While a member of the Bears 4A team Ruda played as a linebacker during the 2007-08 season and played runningback/defensive lineman for the 2008-09 season.

Ruda said his discussion to approach OPSU was partially influenced by his current coach Billy Burns.

“Coach Burns told me that he played ball there,” Ruda said. “As the year progressed I decided to send some of my game tapes to them.”

Burn said Ruda is a good athlete that was easy to coach.

“I am excited that he is going to play at the next level,” Burns said.

Burns said he played basketball at OPSU (1995-1997) and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelors of Science in education.

Ruda said he will receive a partial athlete scholarship and will pursue a degree in physical training.

“I want to get a degree in physical training and continue to get my doctorate of chiropractic,” Ruda said.
