Lindsey Jennings, a junior at San Jon high school, said Tuesday she has been invited to represent New Mexico Girls Basketball at the 22nd Annual Down Under Sports Tournaments in Australia.

“Not everybody gets an opportunity like this,” Jennings said.

Jennings, 16, said she has played basketball since she was 11 years old. She said she will use this opportunity to grow as a player.

“I am going to meet a new team and learn how to play as a team with them,” Jennings said.

Jennings said she would like to continue her play after she graduates from San Jon. She said this trip may help to open doors at the next level.

Athletes from the U.S., Australia and New Zealand come together each year to participate in the Down Under Sports Tournaments.

“I am kind of nervous about the trip,” Jennings said. “I have never been away from home that long and I have never flown. Now here I am going around the world and flying for 14 hours.”

Jennings, is the daughter of Shane and Leasha Jennings of Tucumcari.

She is active in volleyball, basketball and track and was awarded an honorable mention to the district 4-1A basketball team.

Lindsey was personally invited by and will be coached by Dwayne Stevens of San Antonio, Texas, said Leasha Jennings.

Leasha said Stevens is the New Mexico Girl’s Mountain Conference Basketball Coach.

Lindsey is also active in many other school activities. She said she is president of the Class of 2011, student council treasurer, FFA reporter, a member of National Honor Society and FCA and is also active in the C Bar C 4-H Club and serves as sentinel.

Jennings has several fund raising events planned with times and dates to be announced. She is looking for sponsors to help cover the $4,700 cost of the 12 day event.

“All sponsorships for any amount are greatly appreciated,” said Leasha Jennings.

“By supporting our counties youth, you are supporting their future.”
