Annual shrimp boil fundraiser raises $16,000

Special to QCS

Nearly 235 Tucumcari-area citizens celebrated the 11th annual Mesalands Community College Foundation’s Mardi Gras Cajun Shrimp Boil in a big way.

This year’s scholarship fundraiser netted over $16,000 for the Foundation.

After more than a decade of hosting the event, the accumulative numbers are impressive with a total of $130,000 earned. Of the $43,000 of the total that has been earmarked for Mesalands scholarships, $28,000 has already been awarded. More than $87,000 has been endowed to provide scholarships for future generations.

“We are very pleased that this fundraiser has become an annual event in the lives of so many people in the community, and for their generosity,” said Dr. Phillip O Barry, president of Mesalands Community College.

Paula McCasland was the winner of the four-day Baja Mexico cruise.

Mesalands students Dustin Jacobs of Estancia and Francis Brown of Cape Coral, Fla., expressed their gratitude for the availability of scholarships because of the generosity of area citizens.
