U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M., will be guest speaker at the Mesalands Community College graduation ceremonies on May 7, according to a college news release recapping highlights of the April 14 board of trustees meeting.
Also from the meeting:
• College President Phillip O. Barry presented an appropriation request that has been submitted to U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Lujan to assist in the establishment of the Renewable Energy Resource Center (RERC). The mission of the RERC, located at Mesalands Community College, will be to promote and implement the use of renewable energy technologies through education, training, and workforce development. The college is proposing $986,000 for this project for fiscal year 2011.
• Axel Hungerbuehler, faculty, natural sciences/museum curator at Mesalands, presented some of the specimens that were donated by the late Howard Shanks to the Mesalands Community College Foundation, Inc. In 2009 Shanks died and in his will he left his life-long collection of minerals and fossils to the Foundation. According to Hungerbuehler, the Foundation has received over 15,000 specimens.
