Resident keeps smoke shop alive

An effort to keep business alive in Tucumcari is the reason Roy McKinney said he bought Route 66 Smoke Shack.

“I have looked around town and seen so many businesses have closed,” McKinney said. “This town can not afford to lose businesses left and right.”

The business, formerly known as Smokers Discount LLC on 202 West Tucumcari Boulevard would have been the third business to close its doors in the past four months.

Hamilton Big Country Ford closed in February and Movie Gallery closed on May 24.

McKinney, 70, said he was approached by Patty Fuentes, an 11-year employee of Smokers Discount to save the business.

“This is a good investment,” Fuentes said. “This is the only drive-thru smoke shop in town.”

Fuentes is the manager of the smoke shop.

“We have had a lot of former customers return,” Fuentes said. “They were happy that we were back in business.”
