A Wednesday afternoon grass fire eight miles south of Tucumcari at Quay Road 55 spanned a 600-acre perimeter, Tucumcari firefighter Scott Jaynes said.
“The whole area was about 600 acres. Of course, not everything inside that area was burned, that was the outside perameter. Luckily it was an area where there weren’t any houses,” Jaynes said.
Large smoke clouds were visible from inside the city limits and the smell of smoke was faint in the air around 4 p.m. Wednesday. Deputy fire chief Kalon Lafferty said the cause of the fire is unknown. Jaynes said city firefighters were paged at 3:50 p.m. to assist Quay Rural Fire Department units and the city fire units returned at about 6 p.m after the fire had been extinguished.
